Description/Data:
BACEs (Beta-site APP-Cleaving Enzymes), also named β-secretases, are membrane-bound aspartic proteases of the pepsin family. BACE-1 is the principle beta-secretase responsible for cleavage of amyloid precursor protein (APP) and, therefore, is a potential target for treatment of Alzheimer's disease. BACE-1 is widely expressed and likely has additional functions including the liberation of a membrane-bound sialyltransferase.
It is important in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease, and in the formation of myelin sheaths in peripheral nerve cells.
