The HMGA2 protein is a member of the High Mobility Group (HMG) family of non-histone chromatin proteins. It is expressed in Neural Stem Cells (NSCs). The level of expression decreases as a function of NSC age. It is also expressed in some some cancers. HMGA2 regulates chromatin structure and gene expression by binding AT-rich sequences near promoters, altering the conformation of the surrounding DNA and thus modulating the binding of other transcription factors at the promoter. The deletion, amplification, and rearrangement of this gene are associated with myxoid liposarcoma and suggest a role in adipogenesis and mesenchymal differentiation.

A gene knock out study in mouse demonstrated that this gene is involved in diet-induced obesity.
