Picture

The synaptonemal complex is a proteinaceous complex that apparently mediates synapses during the zygotene stage and then disintegrates. It is a complex structure that unites homologous chromosomes during the prophase stage of meiosis. It is the result of chromosome pairing interactions and not the cause of them.

In the developing nervous system, SCP1 is expressed exclusively in neural progenitors, but not in differentiated neurons.
