SMG1 encodes a protein involved in nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) as part of the mRNA surveillance complex. This protein has kinase activity and is thought to function in NMD by phosphorylating the regulator of nonsense transcripts 1 protein.
The absence of a protein called SMG1 could be a contributing factor in the development of Parkinson's disease and other related neurological disorders, according to a study led by the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen). http://medicalxpress.com/news/2013-10-absence-smg1-protein-contribute-parkinson.html
