Kir K+, KCNJ2 or Inwardly rectifying potassium channels pass current (positive charge) more easily in the inward direction (into the cell). It is thought that this current may play an important role in regulating neuronal activity, by helping to establish the resting membrane potential of the cell.
Defects this channel are the cause of long QT syndrome type 7 and short QT syndrome type 3. They are characterized by ECG arrythmias and cause syncope and sudden death in response to excercise or emotional stress.
