Ion channels are integral membrane proteins that help establish and control the small voltage gradient across the plasma membrane of living cells by allowing the flow of ions down their electrochemical gradient. The Kv3.1 subunit is a six transmembrane glycoprotein that belongs to the C subgroup of the potassium channel family. It is a voltage-dependent channel selective for potassium that helps regulate auditory neurons.
