The TRA-1-81 antibody reacts with a 200-240 kD cell surface antigen expressed by human embryonic stem cells (ESC), induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) embryonic germ cells (EGs), and embryonal carcinoma cells. The expression of TRA-1-81 on human ESC is downregulated upon differentiation.

TRA-1-81 is not confined to human EC cells, but is also found on several neoplastic and normal tissues. TRA-1-81 immunoprecipitates a 420kD and a 250kD protein.No immunoreactivity is seen with murine EC, EG or ES cells.
